Get Prepared

There are two well-known expressions: “Be prepared.” and “If you are prepared, you will not fear.” Sound advice. With all the commotion going on around us and certainly more yet to come, it’s a good idea to stop and take note of your current level of preparedness and make any necessary adjustments. That includes food, water, first aid, and… power. Power options are home energy storage systems like the Lion Sanctuary (learn more) or portable solutions.

Let's focus on portable power

In times of pending emergencies, portable power becomes an essential component to your preparedness and often your survival. You’ll need power for medical devices, communication tools like cell phones and computers, lights and critical household appliances. You won’t be able to rely on power from the grid or utility companies so you’ll want to get your own portable power units to use around the house or on the go.

Below we'll discuss what types of portable power to consider, provide several recommendations on which ones to get, and a host of other helpful things to help you get prepared.

Dealing with a Disaster... Now

Ok, you’re currently dealing with a disaster. Don’t panic, we’ve got some things that will help you get through this. Next to making sure you and your family are safe and have shelter, let’s turn to some ways to keep the lights on, the phones working, and some tools to help you survive.

Let's focus on portable power to keep things running.

If you can ride out the disaster in your home, you’re fortunate. If not, hopefully you’ve found a place with friends, family, faith or a community shelter. You’ll need a portable source of power to keep the lights on, power communication devices like TVs, laptops, and ham radios. You also need power to run basic kitchen appliance like a fridge and freezer and something to cook with. We’ve got several portable power solutions for you.

You're going to make it through this disaster, big or small. Keep calm and focus on the basics.

Below are some additional ideas to make it through these challenging times.

TYPES OF POWER

When disasters hit, you basically have two power options to keep all your devices running — generators and portable power units. You'll need enough power to run communication devices like phones, computers and TVs and enough power for essential devices like lights, fridge and freezer, and medical devices like CPAP machines.

We HIGHLY recommend whichever one you choose, use it regularly so when a disaster comes, you know where the power unit is, how to already use it, and have it charged and ready to go. All of the power units can be used in your daily life — around the house, the yard, on the go and during fun adventurer too! So use them regularly, whatever the day brings.

GENERATOR POWER

Generators can provide a good source of power because they often have a higher output (watts) so they can run things that require lots of power AND that you want to run for longer periods of time. Fuel-based generators are an option but they also have some limitations:

  • Requires fuel so you need to have a supply of gas on hand and keep restocking that based on how much you use the generator. During disasters, it may be challenging to even get enough fuel to run this type of generator—no fuel, no power... no good.
  • Emits fume or other types of pollutants so you can't use them indoors and their not as friendly to the environment.
  • Noise levels vary but generators can be noisy which means you'll want to set them far enough away from you that you're not bothered by the noise. That also means they're a bit more likely to "walk off" when you're not looking.
  • Maintenance plans need to be put into place just like any fuel-driven piece of equipment. Generators require maintenance. And maintenance means more money.

Tip: There is a high-quality lithium generator you might want to check out. It doesn't have the above limitations. It's called the Lion Safari ME. Learn More

PORTABLE POWER UNIT

Lithium based portable power units provide a great alternative to fuel-based generators. They are safe, silent and renewable.

Here's some key advantages of lithium power units over fuel-based generators:

  • No gas is needed. You can recharge them by harnessing the power of the sun using solar panels. They can also be recharged by plugging them into a standard wall outlet.

  • No pollutants or fumes. They are eco-friendly, can be used indoors—that's good for you and for the planet.

  • Silent. You won't have to worry about noise because they are virtually silent (other than a small fan that turns on occasionally).

  • No Maintenance. They'll hold a charge for several months and up to a year if you don't use it during that time and you don't have to change fluids, spark plugs or other repairs.

Tip: There are different types of portable power units that have a range of capacities and features. You may want to get a small one that fits into the palm of your hand for light needs and another, more powerful one as a "work horse". Learn more.

RECOMMENDED PORTABLE POWER UNITS

So, which of all the portable power units are best? And which ones will work best for your specific needs. We may be a little biased (not really) but here are several top units with overall superior value...

LION SAFARI ME

Portable Workhorse Solar Generator

One of the best portable power units is the Lion Safari ME Solar Generator. It has ample stored energy that can be renewed by the sun, has enough output to power virtually anything you can plug into a standard wall outlet, and it has versatility through AC, USB, USB-C, 12V and DC outputs. The Safari ME is the workhorse of power units. It’s safe to use indoors, silent and renewable with optional solar panels and expansion battery too.

LION SAFARI LT<br>

Lightweight Yet Powerful Solar Generator

Another great portable power unit is the Safari LT. Think of it as a lighter, smaller version of the Safari ME. The LT has enough power to keep cell phones and other communication devices charged, TVs and mini fridges running, CPAP machines working and many other devices too. It weighs only 11 lbs. and can be recharged by solar panels, AC outlets and even the 12V cigarette lighter in your vehicle. This unit is an “every day” power unit as well as for emergencies.

RECHARGING YOUR POWER UNIT

Portable power is a great way to keep all your devices charged. But how do you keep your portable power units charged? With the three units we recommended (Trek, Summit, and Safari), they have multiple ways to be recharged — from a wall outlet, from the sun through solar panels, and some can even be recharged using your vehicle or a hand crank. Lion Energy has specific solar panels for each power unit that you can check out from our main page on this website. They are easy to plug into each unit. The Trek can be charged in ~6 hours, the Summit in as little as 3.5 hours and the Safari in just over 80 minutes.

Wall Charging

All portable power units should come with a charging cord for the wall. It's pretty straight forward, plug the correct end into the power unit (usually on the back) and the other end into the standard wall outlet. The power units we recommended all have a display or lights that will show it is charging.

Solar Charging

Harnessing the power of the sun through solar panels is a great way to recharge the power unit — it may take a little longer because you need good, direct sunlight but it's good for the planet and good on your pocket book. The power units we recommended all have optional solar panels for them and easily plug into the back or side of the unit. And the Summit and Safari can use multiple panels connected together for quicker charging.

12V Charging

Some portable power units like the Safari can also be charged using the 12V output in your vehicle, sometimes called the cigarette lighter outlet. When plugged into this 12V output, the power unit is going to be recharged using the energy generated from the vehicle.

Wind or Water Charging

If you're really wanting to go green, you can find charging adapters by searching the internet that can recharge many power units using wind or water flow. Just be sure the adapter can connect to your specific portable power unit.

Hand Crank Charging

Another way to recharge some power units — and get in a good workout as well — is to use a hand crank. It connects to the power unit and then you use the "muscle power" method and crank the handle around and around. This isn't for the faint of heart but can be used in emergencies when the other options aren't available.

OTHER GREAT SOLUTIONS

At this point you may be thinking, "I want more!" So, in addition to the basics we've already discussed and recommended, here are some other great solutions you should consider. Check them out!

If you're wanting something to power rooms in your house or even the whole house, check out the Lion Sanctuary Lithium Energy Storage system by clicking here. It can use the solar panels from your roof to not only power your home during sunny days but also at night or when the sun or the grid isn't available... like during brown outs and disasters or emergencies. It's a great system that's you'll love, especially in times of need.
